Eddy DeCastro and his wife are celebrating their first Texas Thanksgiving this year, after transplanting from their home in Florida less than one year earlier, when obeying the voice of God completely changed their circumstances.
After 23 years of government service, DeCastro's job was terminated in 2004. In the years that followed, DeCastro and his wife attempted multiple businesses and a church, none of which ultimately succeeded, leaving them facing bankruptcy. “Miraculously, God kept our credit in tact," said DeCastro. "It was one miracle after another. God spared us from having to lose our house during that time."
Then in 2008, God spoke to DeCastro’s heart a word that would dramatically change their course for years to come.
“Sometimes it's a rhema word that hits you right between the eyes," said DeCastro. "But sometimes just an inclination, that you might not say right away this is God." A still small voice is how the Lord spoke to DeCastro to reapply for the position of Deputy Director of Health, which he had already been denied one year earlier. By this time, DeCastro was convinced that the fact he had not received the job sooner was part of God's higher purpose.
“God wanted to do more in me," said DeCastro. "He took me through a process, from faith to faith."
Through the difficulty of those processes, DeCastro and his wife kept faithful.
“I thought I was done with government work,” said DeCastro. "Throughout that time I just kept giving from what I had and serving the Lord in whatever way I could.”
So when DeCastro felt prompted in his spirit to reapply for the job late in 2008, he was prepared to trust the Lord. And when the job was no longer available in Florida, a greater demand was put on his faith.
“The Lord spoke to me the scripture in Ephsians 5,” said DeCastro. "Which says 'Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her.'" DeCastro felt God was asking him to do something that would challenge him, but ultimately would be best for his family.
Shortly after being hired as Deputy Director of Health of El Paso, Texas in early 2009, DeCastro realized that many years earlier God had already prepared for what he had faced.
“Back in the early 90s, I had received a prophetic word that God was going to give me a [prosperous] government job,” said DeCastro. "I had discarded that word, but when I got the job and the offer matched, I remembered the prophetic word."
As the fall 2009 has come, DeCastro has seen his share of challenges at his new job.
"The job I have can be very controversial," said DeCastro. "It is scrutinized in the media and a lot of stress is involved." But DeCastro hasn't allowed that to back him down from pursuing more of God's promise. "Because it's fulfillment of prophesy, the enemy wants to rise against it," said DeCastro. “There are always valleys. With the prophetic and spiritual warfare, you're either trailblazing for the Kigndom of God or dispossessing the enemy out of something he stole."
Last week, after recovering from pneumonia and rising above recent challenges, DeCastro returned to work, where he believes he is positioned in destiny for the next thing God has for him and his wife.
“I am putting my wife through nursing school here in Texas,” said DeCastro. Her job will provide flexibility for the DeCastros to go the nations, including going to Cuba as a prophetic/apostolic evangelist, according to DeCastro.
DeCastro says he is thankful for those whom he can call to pray with him through the tough times, and for relationships that stand with him.
